The Brittany is a relatively new breed to falconry in UK and they are the smallest of the Hunter Pointer
Retrievers (HPRs). Originally bred in the Callac region in Brittany France around the 1850s by crossing the
French Spaniels and the English and Welsh setters in that region bred by there handlers who were after
breeding an HPR with the same build as a cob horse, with deep chest and well muscled and could cover a
lot of land and with the willingness to hunt all day.
Initially bred as a HPR for the shooting fraternity in falconry we only use the hunt, point as we do not
require the dog to retrieve. They are an excellent companion in the field or at home with the family playing
with the kids or hanging about the garden burning off energy that they seem to have no end of, they are
very easily trained but training needs to be firm and consistant throughout because if they can get away
with it they will .
Brittanys should range in a height of 17.5 inches to 20.5 inches at the withers, with bitches being shorter
and dogs being taller. A properly constructed and a fit and healthy dog should maintain a weight between
36 and 43lbs, depending upon height.(16 to 19 kg)
The Brittany comes in four colours orange & white, black & white, tricolour and
liver & white there is a new colour starting to come through in the breed which is
really a tricolour the pups are born with a dark brown and white coat but as they
get older they change colour to a deep red and white with black tips on their
ears, I have bred this colour myself in the past.
I have kept Brit's for about 15yrs now my 1st one came to me by accident at the time I was breeding GSP,s
and I lost a young dog that I was keeping back out of a litter for myself and a friend of mine bred Brit's
in Essex and had a litter ready and he offered one to me which I accepted her name was Tess and
over the years she was my constant hawking companion until she went onto the happy hunting
ground at the age of 13yrs.
